Creation

Of An Aubusson Tapestry

The weaving of an Aubusson tapestry is performed using a basse-lisse loom, which is a horizontal loom. The weaver is called a lissier (a man) or a lissière (a woman). A bench onto which he/she sits is incorporated within the loom.

The creation of a tapestry follows several steps:

1) Design of a model by the artist.

2) Reproduction of this model, (enlarged if necessary) to the final dimensions of the tapestry on the sketch. This sketch once installed under the warp, will guide the weaver.

3) Preparation of the warp and its installation on the loom.

4) Choice of the wools.

The tapestry is executed with the reverse side showing on the loom. This means that the weaver sees the result of his/her work only at the end of the realization, when the warp is cut. This moment is called "le tomber de la tapisserie" (the falling of the tapestry). It is a moment of emotion, the end of a long work. What will it reveal? Will it be a success?

This kind of artistic expression demands confidence, precision, patience and a love of challenge.
